How to choose a business domain name

Simple, practical advice for picking a business domain you won't regret — and what to do if the one you want is taken.

Keep it simple

  • Short, easy to say and easy to spell
  • Close to your business name where you can
  • Avoid hyphens and numbers if possible

.com.au or .com?

For an Australian small business, a .com.au signals you’re local and is well worth having. Many businesses secure both .com.au and .com if they can.

If your first choice is taken

  • Try adding your location or trade (e.g. valeplumbingbrisbane)
  • Consider a slightly different but still clear variation
  • Don’t settle for something hard to spell over the phone
